Soccer star Megan Rapinoe kneels during national anthem

“I am disgusted with the way he has been treated and the fans and hatred he has received in all of this”, Rapinoe told Foudy.

“I think it’s actually pretty disgusting the way he was treated and the way that a lot of the media has covered it and made it about something that it absolutely isn’t”. And if nothing else, what he’s done is he’s generated more conversation around some topics that need to be talked about. He said then that he would not “stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color”.

Kaepernick first sat in protest during the national anthem ahead of a 49ers preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.

The US Women’s National Team (USWNT) star, in response to a tweet thanking her for the gesture, responded with a tweet saying “It’s the least I can do”. And Megan has definitely kept this already raging conversation going.

Like Kaepernick, Rapinoe has gotten some backlash for her decision. Rapinoe also confirmed after the game that her bold move in front of dozens of people was meant to “keep the conversation going”.

“I support our players when they want to see change in society, and we don’t live in a flawless society”, Goodell added. Two weeks before the 2012 London Olympic Games, in which Megan would play a crucial part in the U.S. Women’s National Team’s win, she took the opportunity to stand up for LGBTI equality, and came out publicly.

Obama said this week he had not followed the storyline closely when asked about Kaepernick, but he said the quarterback was following a long line of athletes exercising their constitutional right to protest. Most recently, he and teammate Eric Reid took a knee during the national anthem last week before a preseason game against the San Diego Chargers.

Cruz said Obama essentially told Kaepernick, “That’s right, disrespect the flag”.

AP NFL shot a photo of Lane sitting alone on the Seahawks bench during the anthem.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) has a growing number of supporters in his protest against racial oppression. But both will undoubtedly consider this a worthwhile endeavor if they are able to affect real changes in policy by ensuring that their struggles and those of their fellow Americans do not fade into the background. During the game and after I went and spoke to some military veterans about their stance in what Kaepernick had done, and how did it make them feel. “That’s not the case at all”.

“I’m now working with organizations to be involved, and making sure I’m actively in these communities, as well as donating the first million dollars I make this year to different organizations to help these communities and help these people”, the player said. “I have great respect for them”, Kaepernick said.
