The brother of Pakistani model-cum-actress Qandeel Baloch has confessed that he drugged and then strangled his sister in the name of “honour”.

Following his arrest, Azeem defended the murder by blaming Baloch’s social media presence and “shameful” photographs, even though Baloch’s modeling career was the family’s chief source of income.

“Yes of course, I strangled her”, Wasim said defiantly at a press conference, organised by police, on Sunday.

Wasim Baloch confessed to murdering his sister and described it as an “honour killing”. The death of Baloch, referred to by many as Pakistan’s Kim Kardashian West, comes just weeks after reports claim she sought protection from the government after receiving anonymous death threats. In one of Baloch Facebook posts, the model tried to burst out to change the typical orthodox mindset of the Pakistani people, CBC reported. But Islamic law in Pakistan allows a murder victim’s family to pardon the killer, which often allows those convicted of honor killings to escape punishment.

Waseem said “she brought dishonour to the Baloch name” due to risque videos and statements that she posted on social media.

But many conservatives pushed back, with some arguing online that her family would have had “no choice”.

Baloch became famous through her tireless self-promotion and suggestive “selfies” posted on social media and had amassed tens of thousands of followers.

Both adored and reviled, Qandeel, who was buried Sunday, referred to herself as a “modern day feminist” and had almost 750,000 followers on Facebook. And Baloch’s parents have been taken into protective care, according to the Tribune.
