Soft Swansea goal pushes hapless Villa closer to drop

Aston Villa’s slim hopes of Premier League survival are now dissipating even further – after a 1-0 defeat to Swansea City yesterday.

Villa slumped a massive 12 points short of safety with another poor display as the Swans put daylight between themselves and the drop zone.

It was a goal celebration pregnant with possibilities, the most likely one being that it had guaranteed Swansea City will stay in the Premier League. We get a good price on Swansea -1 and I think that is the best bet.

Bafetimbi Gomis, recalled to the Swansea starting line-up, produced a neat turn but his shot was wayward and Guzan went untested in the Villa goal.

Upcoming fixtures don’t come easy for Villa with Chelsea to visit next week before they welcome Bournemouth to Villa Park.

Gestede powered a header straight at goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski in the 33rd minute, before seeing his acrobatic attempt well blocked by Williams – the Swansea captain with whom he was earlier involved in a heated on-field tussle. There are many reasons why [it has gone wrong], we will all have to do a lot of reflecting, look at ourselves, look at us as a squad, what’s been going on – because there’s a lot that’s been going on.

“But without scoring in that period you will have a tough time second half”. Let Brian Little or Sid take them for the rest of the season.

“Only the present is important, the match against Aston Villa, not the future”.

Unfortunately, having fluffed his lines and missed the ball completely, Guzan could only watch as it struck Federico Fernandez on the shoulder before bouncing into an empty net. The Icelander has scored seven times in his last 11 league games.

“Until mathematically it is not possible why should we give up?”

He told Sky Sports: “There’s still points to play for and as long as there are games left there are more points to be won. If you win, it is expected, if you lose it is not great”, said Guidolin, who is back in the dug-out after recovering from a lung infection.

“I said three or four weeks ago he can score 15 goals in a season because he is very clever and can play in all positions in the last 30 metres”.
