In his letter, Maulana Jawwad said that it was tragic that the leader of Islamic Movement, Ayatollah Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky was attacked by the Army of Nigeria which killed scores of innocent Muslims and later arrested Zakzaky.

Musa Suleiman, another witness, reportedly said that most of the victims were killed in Warwara.
Some 20,000 people have been killed and more than 2.5 million others made homeless since the beginning of the Boko Haram militancy in Nigeria in 2009. According to AFP, news of the attacks took time to spread because telecom masts in the area had been destroyed by the Islamist militants in previous raids.

One officer and soldier were killed when militants ambushed a convoy of troops, he said. Several countries in the region have constituted a 8,700 member strong Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) which comprises troops from Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Benin to fight the menace.
