Some 20,000 people have been killed and more than 2.5 million others made homeless since the beginning of the Boko Haram militancy in Nigeria in 2009. According to AFP, news of the attacks took time to spread because telecom masts in the area had been destroyed by the Islamist militants in previous raids.

Since August, hundreds of Nigerian residents have crossed again throughout the border, wooed by President Muhammadu Buhari’s pledge to significantly dent Boko Haram’s preventing capability by the top of the yr.

The attack led to a firefight between the insurgents and soldiers as residents of Buratai fled to other villages.

“Boko Haram terrorists had been degraded and weakened by the military after series of operations”, Major General Yusha’u Abubakar told reporters in Maiduguri, the capital of the northeastern state of Borno.

“Smoked out of their hideouts and badly bruised by our gallant military, the Boko Haram terrorists are desperate, especially in the face of the depletion of their food supplies”.

This latest attack comes as Boko Haram fighters have intensified their attacks on Buratai and nearby settlements. The government has vowed to end the Boko Haram insurgency by this month, but the deadline looks likely to be missed.
