Soldiers tell fearful Muslim girl, ‘I will protect you’
Peek created the hashtag #IWillProtectYou, urging other veterans to demonstrate support for Sofia and any other Muslim children who may feel targeted.

‘Sad day in America when I have to comfort my 8-year-old child who heard that someone with yellow hair named Trump wanted to kick all Muslims out of America. ‘It was the first time that it really drove home to me that we’re in a risky place right now’. After seeing presidential candidate Donald Trump call on television for barring Muslims from entering the country, the 8-year-old started packing her favorite things and checking the locks on the doors because, in her mind, Donald Trump’s push to ban Muslims entering the country meant the Army would come and rip her family from their home.
The post on Facebook was shared over 20,000 times and was seen by Kerri Peek.
“No child in America deserves to feel that way”. Peek is an Army veteran who was so horrified by the story that she was not able to go to sleep that night.
“Please show this picture of me to your daughter”.
‘…From one mother to another, my heart breaks at how scared your precious daughter must be. “There are good people in the world, and the good people will always protect her from the evil people”.
Unwittingly the post sparked the hashtag #IWillProtectYou as various different service members spoke up to reassure Sofia nothing would happen to her. The #IWillProtectYou hashtag quickly went viral when current military members and veterans posted pictures of themselves in uniform and telling Sofia that she will be safe.
She took to Facebook to share the cause of her daughter’s distress.
“A lot of them, they call her out by name”, Melissa Yassini said on Wednesday. “That they are safe here in America”, she wrote on Facebook.
Many U.S. service members obliged, posting their own messages of support.
“Christians, atheists, Jews, every walk of life, every stage, have reached out to Sofia and I with overwhelming support and love”, Yassini told Upworthy.

“I have probably received close to 500 messages from various people in our military, from just people”, Melissa told Upworthy.
