A wind-fueled brush fire that charred 1,236 acres near a Ventura County beach is now 70 percent contained, Cal Fire officials said.
Maks and her family were driving on the highway after attending the National Basketball Association game in Los Angeles between the Lakers and Clippers, and were headed to their holiday home in Santa Barbara about 11 p.m. Friday.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, they said, and there were no reports of damage to structures.
Emma Wood State Camp remains closed, Lorenzen said.
A 2-acre spot fire discovered just after 4 a.m. Sunday was “highly visible” from Highway 101, said Ventura County Fire Capt. Mike Lindbery.
“There was nobody stopping us on the highway as we got closer and closer, so we thought it was totally safe for us to drive past it”, Maaike Maks told CNN.
The Solimar Beach community, with 50 to 60 homes, and a nearby campground were under a mandatory evacuation order, while a voluntary one had been issued for the nearby Faria Beach community, where there are 30 to 40 homes, fire officials said.
About 600 firefighters responded to the scene on Saturday.
Officials had canceled the evacuations by Saturday evening. Evacuations for about 50 homes in Solimar Beach north of Ventura were rescinded.
Speaking about the valiant efforts of the firefighters, Tom Clemo, deputy fire chief from the neighboring city of Santa Monica, which aided the firefighting effort, said as follows.
The 101 Freeway was also reopened Saturday afternoon after the California Highway Patrol shut down both directions to State Route 33 and State Route 150.

The blaze was pushed by a strong northwest wind, according to the Ventura County Fire Department, one of several agencies battling the fire.
