The first blast happened near an entrance to the base, which is beside Mogadishu’s main airport, and the second at a nearby checkpoint manned by Somali government forces.

Speaking on Radio Andalus, the terror group’s propaganda outlet, Al Shabaab spokesman Abdulaziz Abu Musab claimed responsibility for the attack and said the global peacekeeping missions were targeted.

At least 13 people are killed in an attack perpetrated by radical Islamic terrorist group Al-Shabab in Mogadishu, Somalia.

It is said al-Shabaab was behind the attack, and that they were fighting back to recapture some of the main towns after being pushed out by United Nations peacekeepers.

A witness told Xinhua that there were huge blasts near the airport.

“We understand at least seven from a private security firm died”, said Ali Farah, a police officer.

“In Somalia, al-Shabab has aspired since its founding about 10 years ago to rule the country under a fanatical interpretation of Sharia law”.

Government officials were not immediately available for a comment.

Al-Shabaab have also carried out cross border raids into neighbouring Kenya as a means to pressure the Nairobi government to withdraw its forces from the African Union deployment in Somalia.

The other bomb struck outside an army checkpoint staffed with Somali forces, the wire service says.

Early this month, al Shabaab killed 10 Somali soldiers when they rammed a vehicle packed with explosives into a Somali army base southwest of the capital.

The mission said the al-Qaeda linked militant group would not succeed in destabilizing the country, located in the horn of Africa.
