Some begin picking up pieces in Missouri after flooding
ST. LOUIS (AP) – The worst of the risky, deadly winter flood is over in the St. Louis area, leaving residents of several water-logged communities to assess damage, clean up and figure out how to bounce back – or in some cases, where to live.

Twenty deaths were blamed on flooding – almost all of them from motorists driving onto wet roads – and searches continued for two missing men in southwest Missouri and two missing teenagers in southern IL. A record-tying crest was expected by the weekend in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, but a floodwall offers protection and is not considered endangered.
Pacific residents are in shock after seeing their town underwater, especially landmarks such as the opera house but also local business as restaurants and florist shops.
Some flood-weary communities were getting relief: The Missouri, Meramec and MS rivers were cresting throughout the St. Louis region.

As the runoff from the deluges that hit around Christmas continues gathering in rivers that empty into the Mississippi River, downstream, gauges are predicting flooding in areas farther south as deep torrents roll that way – in Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana, in early January.

Minor flooding along the Ohio River was affecting parts of Owensboro and Paducah in Kentucky, with most cresting expected by Tuesday.
