The opposition had attacked Modi for not intervening during the debate on the bill in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Pointing out that the bill also needs support from state legislative assemblies before GST is rolled out, he said “this system of one country with one tax will improve transparency in the economic activities”.
Senior ministers Arun Jaitley, M Venkaiah Naidu and Anant Kumar have been tasked with ensuring that all states, including those ruled by the Opposition parties, pass the bill by the end of August.
The chief ministers have assured that, if required, they will call a special session for the passage of the Bill in their state assemblies.
The GST Bill had been passed by the Lower House in May 2015 and was stalled at the Upper House due to lack of political consensus.
The bill will then go to the Presidential for his assent and the states have also been asked to ratify it within 30 days of this.
Even during last week the Rajya Sabha passed five bills including Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, Benami Transactions (Prohibition) (Amendment) Bill, 2016; Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, Dentists (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
In the coming week in the Rajya Sabha, the Mental Health Care Bill 2013 and the Enforcement of Security Interest and Recovery of Debts Laws and Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Bill, 2016 will be taken up.
Many goods brought to be sold in the neighbouring States of Assam, are sold in Assam by some people performing corrupt business practices, as Assam has comparatively higher taxes than the neighbouring States, he said, adding that implementation of GST will check corruption at various levels and the unauthorised collections at check gates will be abolished resulting in reduction of prices of various commodities.
