He was arrested “over alleged defamatory publications”, Effiong said.

The admission comes three weeks after the Nigerian army said a military tribunal is trying 16 officers and troops accused of offenses related to the fight against Boko Haram, including the theft and sale of ammunition.

But Farooq Kperogi, a USA -based Nigerian Professor of Journalism who recently interviewed the journalist, told PREMIUM TIMES he had a conversation with Mr. Salkida recently and the latter briefly mentioned planning to come to Nigeria.

Mr. Salkida expressed his willingness to turn himself in, and security analysts said he fulfilled that promise by flying into the country on Monday.

“Consequently, appeal was made for their unconditional release by the Federal Government”.

“We also appealed to Nigerians that have any information to volunteer to the military or security agencies to enable us rescue them”.

He had informed the DSS in advance that he planned to return to Nigeria after being declared wanted.

The suspect was arrested alongside two other Boko Haram terrorists.

The statement added that during preliminary investigation, the suspected terrorist personally “confirmed his photograph on the wanted list” and further revealed that he is specialized in rearing animals for the terrorist group. They must therefore come forward and tell us where the group is keeping the Chibok Girls and other abducted persons to enable us rescue them.
