Some Signs of Improved Relations as Trump Meets Republican Lawmakers in Washington
A story elsewhere in the Post reports on a meeting today between Donald Trump and Republican members of the U.S. Senate. Many came away with positive feelings, noting that Trump spoke their language about fixing the economy and appointing conservative Supreme Court justices.

Cramer paraphrased what Trump said: “Here I was very critical of Saddam Hussein, saying he’s a very, very bad guy, evil guy”. Ted Cruz on Capitol Hill on Thursday morning – the first meeting between the two former bitter campaign rivals since Cruz suspended his presidential campaign. “But the notion of the intensely competitive Mr. Trump’s being more interested in winning the presidency than serving as president is not exactly a foreign concept to close observers of this presidential race”.
Cruz added that Trump was a “serial philander” who was “utterly amoral”.
So, a “cordial” meeting would have to be considered a great meeting by those Republicans who want to see Trump and Cruz reconcile as part of the larger effort toward party unity. I know that wouldn’t pass muster, probably.

Cruz is not yet endorsing Trump, but allowed that he would not rule out doing so.
According to a whip count of delegates by RNC member Randy Evans, 20 members of the convention’s 112-member rules committee are interested in allowing delegates to be unbound from the candidate they are required to vote for by the results of state primaries and caucuses. This is an improvement from March, when 64 percent expected the party to unite behind Clinton if she became the nominee.
Thursday’s meet took place after Trump met separately with GOP House and Senate members.
“In the days ahead, we will have to consider those realities as well”, Obama said. “But I think his sweet spots are foreign relations, and he has always been recognized for his understanding of the markets and financial institutions and the economy and how all of that relates to each other”.
But Rep. Adam Kinzinger of IL, an outspoken Trump skeptic, said there was a lack of energy in the room. These diverse descriptions indicate some divisions remain. The most extensive word exchange was with Senator Jeff Flake from Arizona, who has publicly shown his concerns about the billionaire’s candidacy.
“Yes, I’m the other senator from Arizona – the one who didn’t get captured – and I want to talk to you about statements like that”, he said. John McCain’s being held captive in the Vietnam War. “I don’t make a habit of supporting people who attack my wife and my family”, he said.
“It was good to have an opportunity to listen to him in a small setting”, Diaz-Balart told McClatchy.
Other lawmakers also welcomed the chance to talk to Trump.
Trump’s meeting with Republican senators was outright contentious at times, according to The Washington Post. The more the presumptive GOP nominee gets himself into trouble, the less Republicans on Capitol Hill step up to defend him.
“Republicans need to recognize that united we stand, divided we fall”.
“We’re moving in the right direction every day”, Spicer said.
