In a closely-contested men’s field, DiCaprio prevailed over “The Danish Girl” star Eddie Redmayne and “Concussion” lead Will Smith, to win best actor for his role as a fur-trapper seeking retribution.

Gervais greeted the crowd (which he labeled “pill-popping sexual deviant scum”) with a predictably astringent opening, setting the tone for an expletive-filled night that was at turns irreverent and frivolous. Voting for the Academy Award nominations, to be announced Thursday, ended on Friday.

Netflix received eight nominations at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards, run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, for original programs such as “Orange is the New Black” and “Narcos”.

That’s down from last year’s audience of 19.3 million viewers, though NBC notes the Globes telecast faced tough competition with the final 15 minutes of Fox’s National Football League playoff game.

Ricky Gervais returned to host the awards show for the fourth time.

The Golden Globes: seemingly the golden opportunity to guess the wrong victor.

“Relax, I’m going to try and be nice”, he said after a few quips. Jennifer Lawrence won best actress in a comedy for “Joy”, her third Golden Globe win for a David O. Russell film, who she thanked effusively in her speech. “Amy Schumer and Lawrence garnered laughs by playing on stereotypes: “As women in Hollywood, people have a lot of preconceived notions about us”, said Lawrence, as Schumer completed the thought with “‘Jen and Amy are so pretty”… and “everyone wants to hang out with us.'” And Helen Mirren, 70, flipped the script on Gerard Butler, 46, saying he looked good for his age.

Brie Larson won the Globe for best actress in a drama for her portrayal of a young mother held captive with her child in “Room”, besting “Carol” co-stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

Winslet won for best supporting actress in a film for her role in the biopic “Steve Jobs“, and Stallone won for best supporting actor in “Creed”, in which he reprised his iconic role of boxer Rocky Balboa. Not even Sean Penn will stop me. Instead, the Globes had a particularly unraveled atmosphere that included Jonah Hill dressed as the bear from “The Revenant”, copious discussion of “Transparent” star Jeffrey Tambor’s male anatomy by Gervais, and much buzzing about Sean Penn’s escapade with Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

In the television categories, USA Network’s “Mr. Robot”, a cyber-security expert with social anxiety, surprised some by winning best TV drama series while Amazon’s musical show “Mozart in the Jungle” won best TV comedy series.

Best foreign language film went to Hungary’s Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul”, a harrowing view of life inside Auschwitz, and best animated film went to Pixar’s acclaimed “Inside Out”.

But the 60-year-old actor fired back at the comedian: “I love seeing Ricky once every three years because it reminds me to get a colonoscopy”.
