The 37-year-old Filipino was on the 48th floor of a luxury Dubai hotel looking out at the city’s skyline that’s crowned by the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

However, a medic on the scene, who declined to be identified, told the Reuters news agency there were “more than 60 people injured with light injuries from smoke inhalation and from crowding while in the stairs evacuating the building”.
“Akala ko katapusan ko na, dasal ako nang dasal (I thought it was the end, I just kept praying)”, the Candaba native told the Manila Bulletin hours after the incident.
But the metropolis, one of seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE), may face questions about the safety of its rapidly-constructed cityscape, especially after another high-rise building caught fire earlier this year.
According to BBC reports, 16 people were injured suffering mostly minor burns while the fire has been brought largely under control.
In 2014, the Guinness Book of World Records declared the Dubai New Years Eve celebration the largest fireworks display of all time.
This is not the first case of a fire reported in one of Dubai’s skyscrapers, as back in February, 2015 “Dubai Torch Tower” faced a similar situation.
Burning debris fell from the building as firefighters raced to contain the blaze.
In November, a massive blaze engulfed three residential blocs in central Dubai and led to services on a metro line being suspended, although no one was hurt.
Mr Flynn, who lives in the United Arab Emirates, said he heard no fire alarm in the hotel despite the raging blaze.
The Address would have a prime spot for viewing the midnight fireworks display, centered at the nearby Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.
The Dubai government has said it will provide residents of The Address alternative hotel accommodation. “There were a lot of people who fainted and there were many ambulances”.
According to the hotel’s website it offers “sophisticated guest rooms and suites feature modern amenities and each is enhanced by a private balcony with views of the Burj Khalifa or Dubai Fountain”.
“Online, people praised Dubai for its quick response, but experts also say it calls into question major fire hazards in the glitzy tourist destination”, Leila says, adding that this is the second major fire in a Dubai skyscraper in a year.
The blaze appeared to have started on the lower floors and quickly spread through the building.

“I was torn; do I watch the fireworks, or do I continue to watch the fire?” he said.
