The son of jailed Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was among six men kidnapped by seven armed men who stormed into trendy restaurant in the Mexican resort Puerto Vallarta.
Mexico’s national attorney general’s office announced on Tuesday evening that a group of agents from the office that specialize in organized crime will join the investigation now being carried out by the state government.
El Chapo’s most recent escape is not his first one. Guzman is the alleged kingpin of the Sinaloa Cartel, believed responsible for trafficking billions of dollars of cocaine into the USA amidst gang warfare in parts of Mexico and South America.
The U.S. Treasury Department froze Jesus Alfredo’s assets in the country in June 2012 and banned U.S. citizens from doing business or carrying out transactions with him, under the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act, known as the Kingpin Act.
Originally posted to El Blog del Narco, the images show gunmen entering a restaureant where Guzman was eating and taking several people, including Guzman.
Prosecutor Eduardo Almaguer told a news conference Jesus Alfredo was among those being held. However, authorities transferred him in May to a federal prison in the northern state of Chihuahua, saying security measures were being improved at Altiplano.

Raul Benitez, a security specialist, said: “There is a war right now for control of the Sinaloa cartel and a central theme in that war is the issue of attacks on his family”. Mexican authorities have confirmed that one of the victims is 29-year-old Alfredo Guzman, one of the sons of famed Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
