Earlier, on expected lines, Sarbananda Sonowal was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party that also formalised his choice as the new Chief Minister.

He thanked Shah for the central leadership’s help during the elections.

53-year-old Sonowal led his party’s campaign in the assembly polls in which the BJP-led alliance bagged 86 seats in the 126-member House.

Later in the evening, Sonowal met three-time former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi at his official residence in Koinadhara hills and invited him for the swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday.

“We will work towards finishing the border-sealing work within two years, and it includes the riverine border”, Mr. Sonowal said. He is there for us in our every need. “We have to complete the unfinished work”, Sonowal said. “The President, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, from the Council of Ministers, with immediate effect”. Minister of State in the PMO, Jitendra Singh, has been given the additional charge of Sonowal’s ministry. “Everyone has to work together leaving aside petty and personal interests so that the people’s expectations can be fulfilled”, Sonowal said in his address to the legislators after the meeting. However, infiltration had come down “after an agreement with Bangladesh”, said a communique from ETV citing Sonowal. “We want to win the hearts of Assam people”, Sonowal said.
