Sony Announces Their Second Generation e-Ink Watch

Sony is crowdfunding yet another watch – this time bring back its stylish FES Watch line of wearables to augment your wardrobe. If you’re living in Japan and would like to support this e-ink fashionable watch, you may pledge anywhere between ¥44,710 and ¥59,940 ($438 to $587) to support it and get the FES Watch U for yourself. The main difference between the first model and this new one is also that the FES Watch U features two e-ink displays, whereas the original model features one flexible e-ink display that made up the band and the face. And because e-ink is very efficient in terms of energy consumption, your watch will stay charged for up to three weeks. Watches are expected to begin shipping in April, 2017.

Sony’s FES Watch is a wristwatch with a customizable look thanks to an electronic paper display that can show a variety of different watch faces, and an ePaper strap which can handle a variety of designs. The original FES watch was equipped with a coin cell battery. Charge time is about 2.5 hours, which seems about standard, and it charges wirelessly when docked on the included cradle.

The new model is available in silver, white, or black colors, and there are also “premium” versions with a combination of colors. For the black model, Sony uses premium material, such as steel and sapphire glass for the watch body – other models use glass. It is IPX5/IPX7 certified which means that it provides protection against rains and involuntary spillage of liquid. We hope they’ll be adding an Android version though, particularly since the Sony smartphones are on this platform.

The FES Watch U already pairs with your phone to control its design, but whereas users could previously only determine the appearance of the watch face, now wearers can change the band’s style as well.
