Playstation 4’s latest big firmware update, 4.00, is now released in all regions.
That’s because while your original PS4 – the actual original or the new slimmer model – does indeed support HDR from today, now there’s nothing you can run on it that makes use of the tech.
But the biggest feature addition is HDR support, which Sony says will roll out to every single PlayStation 4 unit, including the original devices sold in 2013.
VG247 reported that amongst the most interesting features that this new update will bring is the addition of High Dynamic Range (HDR) functionality to all models of the PS4.
The software update, version 4.00 (code-named Shingen), also offers a refreshed system UI, Folder organization, updates to the Quick Menu and Share Menu and Library improvements. Today, the update is available for PS4 owners to download.
The update also comes with features for the as-yet unreleased PS4 Pro, specifically in regards to streaming content. The Quick Menu will pop open in a portion of the screen, and is also customisable. After updating users will see an HDR settings in the Video Output Settings.
The idea is if you have a HDR-compatible telly and a console that supports HDR, you’ll get visuals that are more realistic, strikingly vivid and truer to the way the human eye sees the real world. The left column in the menu includes the new Activity Feed.
