Sony Introduces the PlayStation 4 Pro

According to the report, the new PlayStation 4 Pro will be packed with advanced specs and features.

The PlayStation 4 (PS4) has had the beach body treatment, nearly four years after Sony announced the bigger, fatter, heavier, dumber version, and is being released in two new versions. “The console offers video streaming in 4K quality, supports HDR for both video and gaming making it a great value for money when compared to investing on a 4K bluray player”. Users with 4K TVs will be able to enjoy all PS4 titles in higher quality, such as 4K quality*1 resolution and faster or more stable frame rates. I’m guessing 4K Blu-Ray was cut in favor of the PS4 Pro’s larger 1TB hard drive, but, honestly, that was the wrong decision – excluding 4K Blu-Ray support makes both the Pro and Sony’s own media format look bad.

Earlier in the interview, Cerny did admit that HDR still has a ways to go, but that there are strong benefits to releasing the Pro despite the relatively low number of HDR capable TVs being sold.

House also added that it will not be possible to add 4K UHD to PS4 Pro via a firmware update, either. As rumoured previously, the Japanese tech giant unveiled a more compact PlayStation 4 console and an upgraded 4K ready model which it called the PlayStation 4 Pro.

The PS4 Pro is Sony’s answer to Microsoft’s XBox Scorpio.

However, it can’t be denied that Sony has a head start when it comes to sales what with holiday game releases in just a few more months. You will likely still be able to purchase the original PlayStation 4, but Sony seems to be in the process of phasing it out in favor of this new model.

Video game console manufacturers are now releasing smaller updates more frequently, rather than major updates several years apart. And of course, there’s Sony’s next evolution to prepare for in the form of PS VR – also supported by the PS4 Pro.
