Sony is buying third-party exclusives for PS4, says Xbox boss

This has led some to believe that third-parties are the ones chasing Sony for exclusives, given their market share. So yes, you do find a lot of third-party action games from us, and I do think we should be pushing harder on genre and control….I actually think it’s an industry issue.

Now, Spencer was asked about all the third party exclusives Sony has with the PlayStation 4 by Gamespot at gamescom 2015. “I can tell you, it has nothing to do with market share”.

“We’re making a conscious decision to focus on our first-party games”, Spencer said.

“So, they don’t “gobble” the deals up. I can tell you, it has nothing to do with market share….When you go in to do a deal, with a third party, that third party has its own view of the global market and the value of it. And they should, they should think about their assets and how valuable they are, just like anyone would when they are selling their goods”.

Halo 5: Guardians, Forza 6 Motorsport, Gears of War 4 in 2016, all these titles are clearly attractive and might become classics in a few years but on launch it’s unlikely that they will generate huge increases in the number of Xbox One home consoles that are sold. “I want to have strong third party relations, but paying for many third party exclusives isn’t our long term strategy…”

It’s very possible that Microsoft is getting ready for the very real possibility that the new Lara Croft powered game, which will be launched on November 10, will fail to generate as many Xbox One sales as the company initially thought. With both Sony and Microsoft archrivals in the gaming business, there is no saying if PS4 vs Xbox One will come out ahead at Gamescon.

“Xbox is in a stretch where all its first-party teams are doing an incredible job”.

“I’ll point out too that Sony has some great first-party franchises”.
