Called Aerosense, this new company will open new doors to Sony Mobile who is exploring new markets for its technology – most notable its imaging sensors.

Drones have fast become a tech-lover’s next must-have purchase and companies like DJI and Parrot have capitalised on their ever-increasing popularity, but investment from Sony’s mobile division suggests that it wants a piece of this pie.
Sony is looking to drones to find new business opportunities. Aerosense Inc. will combine these assets and develop comprehensive solutions that meet needs including measuring, surveying, observing, and inspecting. Previous entrants include Nokia Networks, which earlier this month announced a scheme to show that drones carrying smartphones equipped with network testing applications can be used to test the network performance, run network optimisation actions, inspect towers and test radio planning and line-of-sight between radio towers. What we do know is that imagery gathered by the drones will be processed by cloud-based servers.
More details about the device itself should be available next month, at an Aerosense event. It will operate in Japan and there are no plans for overseas expansion at the moment. The firm is trying to launch new initiatives, especially in the Internet of Things (IoT) field.

Prior to this, Sony had already invested in ZMP, which at that time it was assumed that Sony was interested in their self-driving vehicle technology, so the decision to go with drones is an interesting one. Starting next year, the team will create its own drones and offer drone services to other businesses.
