Game developer Marc Flury plays Kokoromi’s Superhypercube on Sony’s PlayStation VR during an event in San Francisco, California. VR is expected to be a $30 billion market by 2020, according to tech advisor Digi-Capital.
The $399 price will not include PlayStation Move controllers, which will be essential to the PlayStation VR experience.
Priced at $399 (£350), the headset will be released in the second half of 2016 – $200 cheaper than the Oculus Rift and have as expensive as HTC’s Vive.
The PlayStation VR headset for the PlayStation 4 will cost just £349 – considerably less than its PC rivals. The Oculus Rift will begin shipping in late March, while HTC’s Vive is looking likely to arrive in April.
The games console and technology giant first unveiled its VR system in 2014 under the name Project Morpheus, and is powered by connecting to the PlayStation 4 console. And for all things virtual reality and PlayStation VR, stay tuned to Mammoth Gamers! PS VR will also continue to be an exclusive PS4 experience. The camera is sold separately for €65.
The headset sports a 5.7-inch display with 100 degree field of vision and includes 360 degree head movement tracking.
Sony says that more than 230 developers are building content for PlayStation VR, from smaller independent teams to larger studios at the industry’s top publishers.
