Sony’s new Android app lets you livestream games to Twitch

The feature provides users with bootloader level security thus making it impossible for someone to wipe the device or flash a new ROM without first entering the required credentials.

Sony has a new security feature called My Xperia Theft Protection (MXTP), but it will raise some issues for fans of unlocked bootloaders. Without warning, it will break your device. For now, there are no custom ROMs available for the devices.

So if you do want to take advantage of this feature ensure that the bootloader has been locked before enabling MXTP.

The app has the ability to capture and stream via YouTube anything that a user chooses to do on his or her handset, and therefore Sony advises caution.

However, according to some Xperia users (via Xperia Blog), enabling the MXTP on the device that already has an unlocked bootloader, leads to the bricking of the smartphone. In this situation, where the bootloader is already unlocked, the MXTP will then try to give back your status to disallow the unlocking of the bootloader.

Sony is aware of the issue and instead of a solution, has recently changed some wording on its Unlocked Bootloader website under the “Risks” section.

In any case, Xperia device owners looking to unlock their bootloader in the future are strongly advised to disable MXTP before proceeding.
