Sony’s new PS4 sports 4K upscaling, upgraded CPU, GPU and RAM

For the last month, the rumoured existence of an enhanced, 4K gaming-ready PlayStation 4 has been the talk of gamers, and now a new report offers supposed details on the performance boosts and how Sony will manage the consoles.

Multiple sources have reported that Sony is secretly working on an upgraded PlayStation 4, and now the new report coming out from an anonymous (but trusted) source close our friend at Giant Bomb, this upgraded PlayStation 4 is internally codenamed as “NEO” and features upgraded CPU, GPU, and RAM.

The anticipated PS4.5 “NEO” will boast some upgraded specs over the current PS4 console.

Games to ship with “Base Mode” and “NEO Mode” starting October.

No price has been locked in for the new PS4 yet, but previous reports indicated it would retail for $399 – the original price of the “base” PS4.

Instead of dividing the market, the report said that from October 2016 all games released for the PS4 must have a “basic mode” which will allow them to function in the old models, and “NEO” for new machines (which enables 4K quality and other improvements).

The NEO will feature a higher clock speed than the original PlayStation 4, an improved GPU, and higher memory bandwidth. It also means there will not be NEO-exclusive titles. There will also be no NEO-only games, nor will NEO users be offered any exclusive unlockables or gameplay options…aside from running a superior version of the game, that is. There are some stipulations though; while developers can take advantage of outputting games at a native 4K resolution, games must run at the same or better framerate in NEO mode. However, what will definitely separate a NEO console to a standard PS4 is frame rate. It will connect to the same PlayStation Store, and users can migrate their PSN accounts over to retain all their purchased content and PS Plus games.
