The results show that Sony’s turnaround is continuing, after years of restructuring in its consumer electronics operations. That said, revenue for Q2 2014 was around half a percent higher. Regarding the mobile business, the company has not made any revisions to its sales estimates and full year operating profit.
How significant? Sony Mobile’s revenue dropped 15 percent to reach $231 million (279.2 billion JPY) during the quarter.

In the same quarter a year ago, it booked a loss of 85.6 billion yen due to impairment charges for the mobile business.
The firm’s new president, Tatsumi Kimishima, said it needed more time to “boost the quality” of the game, which is seen as crucial to its future as it battles Sony and Microsoft Corp for market share in the games market.
The Tokyo-based maker of PlayStation game consoles and 4K Bravia flatscreen TVs also maintained its outlook for an annual operating profit of 320 billion yen in the year, off sales of 7.9 trillion yen, ending March 2016. More than just cameras like their Alpha and RX100 line however, Sony’s “Devices” segment which includes components like smartphone cameras is doing well, and they’re exploring options to take over Toshiba’s sister department as well.

Image sensors, which are used in smartphones, digital cameras, medical devices and self-parking cars, to translate the information in an image into digital signals, is one area where Sony has a lead. At constant exchange rates, sales were down 7 percent. Overall Sony had overall revenue of $15.8 billion, with net profit at $280 million and operating profit at $775 million.
