Sony Tips Flagship Alpha 99 II SLR

Today at the Photokina show in Köln, Germany, Sony marked the 10th anniversary of its Alpha camera range with the launch of the Alpha 99II flagship camera which has an impressive feature set.

The Hybrid Phase Detection autofocus system is made up of 79-point dedicated phase detection and 399-point focal-plane sensors for a 79 hybrid cross point array, and the mirror in front of the sensor is translucent to allow for continuous autofocus. The A99 II adapts the A7 II’s 5-axis image stabilization to a full-frame body, helping it counter both shifting blur in close-ups and rolling blur in low light. It is compatible with the A-system line of lenses. Impressively, despite the inherent light loss of the translucent mirror design, autofocus is sensitive down to -4 EV, the same as Nikon’s lowlight powerhouse, the D5, which means photographers working in dimly lit conditions should have no problem focusing. The new stabilization system provides a shutter speed advantage of 4.5 steps, ensuring the full potential of the 42.4MP sensor can be realized. The A99 II will be available in November for $3,200. More information can be found on Sony’s website.

Other perks? You can finally record 4K video on a full-frame Sony DSLR (without pixel binning, even), and there’s a “Slow and Quick” mode that combines both slow-mo and accelerated video speeds.
