Sony Unveils Mid-Cycle Refresh To PlayStation 4 Game Console

Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC (SIE) will launch two new PlayStation 4 game console models in a dual bid to win over new users and satisfy serious gamers’ demands for the latest technology. A new, slimmer and more energy efficient PlayStation®4 also was announced and will launch starting on September 15, 2016 for $299. But hey, it’s the games that matter in the end, and Sony may have built up too much momentum this generation for questions about the PS4 Pro’s tech to really matter.

“It’s for the hardcore gamer – or the one who’s invested in a high-definition [display]”, PS4 Pro creator Mark Cerny told attendees during a press event in New York City.

The new console, named the PlayStation 4 Pro, features 4K gaming for the first time on any mainstream console. “This new high-end PS4 will sit alongside the new slimmer, lighter PS4, which we officially unveiled today”. Sony also revealed an ungraded Uncharted 4 version for the PS4 Pro.

What can’t the PS4 Pro do? Perhaps most disappointing to potential consumers-and likely making Microsoft very happy-is the decision to not include 4K Blu-Ray disc playback. All games will run in 1080p resolution, and some will even run in a higher or more stable frame rate.

Fortunately, the PS4 Pro will be fully capable of 4K-streaming via Netflix and YouTube, but those with a physical collection are better off with the Xbox One S at the moment.

Zenimax Online Studios has published a short trailer that shows off what The Elder Scrolls Online will look like running on the PS4 Pro.

If you already have a PS4, there doesn’t seem to be any reason to upgrade right now.

PlayStation 4 Pro owners won’t be the only ones getting in on the graphical upgrades, though.
