Sony Unveils Two New PlayStation Units

Should things get a little too competitive, more details about Project Scorpio may be revealed sooner than later. The PS4 Pro uses a Radeon-based 4.20-TFLOPS graphical processor, a huge jump over the 1.84-TFLOP CPU used by in the original PS4 and PS4 Slim. The “standard console moving forward”, the Slim is a smaller, more energy efficient version of the previous Playstation 4 consoles.

Engadget’s Richard Lawler tweeted: “Confirmed: No Ultra HD Blu-ray in the PS4 Pro”.

PlayStation Pro, whose code name is “Neo”, will support Sony’s virtual reality headset, due to launch in October.

“When comparing the new PS4 model to the current model, we’ve reduced volume by 30 percent, weight by 16 percent, and power consumption by 28 percent”, noted President and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House on the company’s Playstation Blog. The “Pro” suggests that it’s meant for higher-end gamers. In fact, that seems very unlikely. Project Scorpio promises to run games with native 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. A console built to power the same vision of 4K gaming. Created to perform as a tech demo instead of a gameplay demo, the new Mass Effect was Sony’s way of showcasing the increased texture detail and how it applies directly to improving characters within a game.

“With more pixels, 4K’s higher resolution delivers graphics that are sharper and have greater detail than ever imagined”. Prices have gone down significantly for 4K HDR TVs in the a year ago, and you can pick up a 55-inch screen for around $1,300 (like the Editors’ Choice LG 55UH8500), but it’s still a sizeable investment.

Downloading 4K Blu-rays digitally are also going to be a hassle if you go that route.

Sony were keen to show off their new toy with some impressive footage of upcoming games Horizon Zero Dawn and Mass Effect Andromeda.

On the streaming side, the Pro will feature new apps from Netflix and YouTube that offer content in 4K including Netflix’s Narcos Season 2 and Marvel’s Luke Cage.

Virtual RealitySony was relatively quiet on the PS4 Pro and how it will work with PlayStation VR.
