Sore loser: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton defends his Super Bowl sulk

A defiant Cam Newton addressed reporters for the first time since the Carolina Panthers’ MVP quarterback walked out of news conference minutes after his team fell to the Denver Broncos at Super Bowl 50 on Sunday.

“I’m on record as being a sore loser”, Cam said. Then you have the contest of who can win with grace and lose with dignity.

I had a lot of time to go back and play everything back and I’ve got to say, I’m human. If you want me be this type of person, I’m not that.

Cam said he felt like his leg was in a bad position and might have gotten rolled in when asked about the fumble he didn’t dive for.

If he had torn a page out of Tebow’s college playbook, Newton would be a hero right now instead of a heel; he’d be celebrated instead of castigated. I know, I know, he’s a competitor and competitors don’t take losing very well. We’ve got two losses. Newton handled his team’s loss immaturely.

Carolina went 17-2 on the season and Newton won the NFL’s MVP award for his efforts. I heard numerous quotes about what if this person was in that situation, how would he have handled it? We have all these people condemning and saying this…

Newton spoke to the media voluntarily on Tuesday even though he admitted he had not wanted to on Sunday. “I think he’s grown up quite a bit”. The coach also said maybe the league or the media should give players a little more time to compose themselves or gather their emotions, before parading them out after such a big loss. I can tell you that.

At the end of the day, the NFL is still a quarterback oriented league. I’ve said it since Day One – I am who I am. We want to win.” Newton takes losing harder than most.

“You know, I think that it’s important for him – the key thing is for him to want to come back”, Elway said.

Newton said he doesn’t care what’s said about him because he works for his team and the fans. I want players that hate to lose, plain and simple.
