Charmian Carr will be forever remembered as the attractive and romantically optimistic eldest von Trapp daughter Liesl from the beloved film The Sound of Music. “Carr considered them her second family”, her family said.

Although she had never taken acting or singing lessons, Carr’s performance, particularly her rendition of Sixteen Going on Seventeen, was widely acclaimed.

“Charmian Carr played the oldest Von Trapp child, and in some ways she maintained that role in real life – guiding, cheering, supporting and generally being there for the rest of her “sisters” and ‘brothers, ‘” said Ted Chapin, president of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization who created The Sound of Music in a statement. “It is with infinite sadness that I share the tragic news that the precious and exquisite Charmian Carr, handsome Liesl, has passed away”, Karath posted on Twitter. While a student at San Fernando High School, Carr was a cheerleader and played basketball and volleyball.

Carr also starred alongside Anthony Perkins in the Stephen Sondheim TV musical Evening Primrose.

She started an interior design business, whose clients included Michael Jackson.

Her family said that Carr married then made a decision to leave the movie business and raise her two children, Jennifer and Emily.

Carr co-wrote two books: “Forever Liesl” in 2000 and “Letters to Liesl” in 2001, where she shared thousands of pieces of mail from fans.
