Sound of Music ‘Liesl’ actress Charmian Carr dies

Actress Kym Karath – who played the youngest Von Trapp Gretl also tweeted a tribute.
Her romantic dance scene with screen boyfriend Rolfe in a gazebo during a thunderstorm while singing “Sixteen Going On Seventeen” was considered one of the movie’s most charming scenes.
Carr also starred with Anthony Perkins in Evening Primrose, a one-hour musical written by Stephen Sondheim, which was filmed for television.
She went on to become a successful interior designer, and ran her own business: Charmain Carr Design while raising two daughters Jennifer and Emily. However, close friends of Carr say she never truly gave up her role as Liesl von Trapp.
She is survived by two children and four grandchildren.
Carr was born Charmian Farnon on December 27, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, the second child of Vaudeville actress Rita Oehmen and musician Brian Farnon.
According to the statement on her website, Carr married Jay Brent in 1967 and chose to give up acting to focus on her two daughters Jennifer and Emily.
Carr later opened a design business, working with pop star Michael Jackson – himself a fan of The Sound of Music.

Through the years the actors who played the children in the movie all kept in touch and communicated often. Between them, they agreed on Carr as a snappier surname. She frequently appearing at sing-a-long performances at the Hollywood Bowl.
With a full life and a memorable role to leave generations with, Charmian Carr bids us “So Long Farewell”. She has been like a sister throughout my life.

Few films have had the staying power as the 1965 musical drama The Sound of Music and Carr played a big role in that.
