South Africa call on Quinton de Kock and Chris Morris
Steven Finn struck twice in nine balls to put a major dent in South Africa’s bid to pull off a record-breaking run-chase in the first Test, in Durban, and boost England’s hopes of securing a 1-0 series lead.

England easily wrapped up the first test match against the Proteas.
Ben Stokes made the breakthrough shortly before tea, breaching van Zyl’s defences to end his resistance on 33.
It was only the second triumph in the opening Test of a series for England in 11 years as South Africa’s status as the top-ranked test nation looked distinctly hollow, extending their number of successive tests without a win to seven.
Du Plessis and De Villiers resisted for almost 24 overs, and that brought nightwatchman Dale Steyn out to survive the last three balls of the fourth day.
“It was hard, but it would have a capped a flawless day for England because De Villiers is the big fish of the whole game”.
South Africa’s batting order shows signs of having a long tail – not that the top or middle order have looked any more useful in recent months – and they are indeed staring down the barrel of an nearly inevitable slow death on the last day.
Finn’s contribution to England’s victory push is remarkable given the Middlesex paceman was initially left out of the touring party due to a bone stress injury in his left foot that he suffered in the United Arab Emirates in October.
Under bright blue skies in Durban, and with no possibility of rain saving South Africa, Ali got one to straighten to De Villiers with the third ball of the day.
“I thought that we built pressure beautifully through that last session and we got our rewards eventually”, said Finn.
Finn had done most of the damage by removing the other two players potentially capable of holding off England’s victory charge.
“You can do well in the nets but it has got to materialise out on the field and we have that hunger to get more runs”. Joe Root, unbeaten on 60 overnight, added 13 to his score before guiding a Kyle Abbott delivery to Van Zyl at first slip. Yet England had always been clear favourites to win despite a morning session that saw them collapse from their overnight 172-3 to 224-6.
On the two days between Test matches, he added: “It’s a really short turnaround now – the shortest I’ve ever done – so we’ve got to be careful with the recovery”.
The Yorkshire keeper’s 79 from 76 balls had helped England establish a 415-run lead after the steady loss of wickets had hampered their pursuit of quick runs.

There were similar reactions from Stokes, who gifted his wicket to Dane Piedt with a foolish reverse sweep, and Taylor, stumped on 42 after coming down the track to the spinner.
