South Africa, New Zealand meet for first ODI since World Cup drama

Although they don’t contain any startling insights, the tactics – titled “Plan / Strategy Handouts” – outline team management’s suggestions on how Steyn and his fellow fast bowlers could get the New Zealanders out. South Africa’s attack did not suss that out and some of their batsmen were done in by it.

What exactly the point is of this one-day series between South Africa and New Zealand, nobody will ever really know. The young side needed that win to boost their self-belief.

“Hopefully we put South Africa under pressure and you never know what’s going to happen”.

The two teams kick things off at Centurion, the same venue where the final T20 was played.

It was an efficient display from the Blacks Caps, who showed greater aggression against South Africa’s spinners and support bowlers, thereby maintaining momentum through the middle overs to set up a total that proved too big for South Africa to chase down.

Someone from South African side mistakenly glided the dossier under the door of guest staying in the same hotel.

With a World Twenty20 around the corner, imagine that instead of a bunch of wasteful one-day internationals, Twenty20s that actually counted towards qualification for the tournament were being played by all those teams now taking part in the “Africa Twenty20 Cup”.

Experimenting with several players who are not part of the regular squad can change the composition of a team but, with “brands”, of cricket becoming the new buzzword, it should not change the way they play. Now, David Wiese has been given the chance to make the role his own.

During the World Cup, he mustered only 73 runs at an average of 12; in the five-game series in England there were just 56 at 11.

Morne van Wyk may hope to be among the 13th, 14th or 15th player, but that seems unlikely even if Quinton de Kock remains out of the squad.

Rilee Rossouw (26) and captain AB de Villiers (14) looked to steady the ship for the Proteas, but their third-wicket stand lasted only until the seventh over, when Neesham held onto a fine overhead catch to dismiss De Villiers – the ball after he had smashed McCullum for six. “Most of the guys got an opportunity to perform in the series”. We’re now looking forward to the Champions trophy.
