South Africa Reappoints Myeni As SAA Chair

At a press conference held at parliament on Monday, the party’s federal executive chairperson James Selfe said Myeni failed to adequately perform her tasks as the chairperson of the Mhlathuze Water Board.

The requirement of rationality obliges courts to engage in an evaluation of the relationship between the means employed to reach a decision on the one hand, and the objective for which the power to make the decision was conferred, on the other.

At its press conference, the DA reiterated its intention to file an application to the Western Cape High Court to have the Myeni’s reappointment set aside.

While she has been in the job, SAA failed to publish two consecutive years of financial reports and recorded apparent losses of more than 4 billion rand ($276 million) in each year, according to the party’s statement.

“[This will be] negative for the economy and the forthcoming ratings assessments where worldwide agencies are looking closely at how the state-owned companies are managed”, says the DA’s Alf Lees.

Suspending Cynthia Stimpel, Head of Treasury for SAA, for removing company documents which SAA said was a breach of its own code and ethics. Instability has accelerated in the past year as senior managers departed and it was embroiled in deals ranging from Myeni’s attempts to renege on a leasing contract with Airbus Group SE to the appointment of a little-known financial adviser to source funding on its behalf.

“We contend that Dudu Myeni is an unfit and inappropriate appointment, incapable of steering SAA in the right direction”.

The DA will specifically focus on the “rationality” aspect of Myeni’s reappointment.

“We as the DA are appalled that Dudu Myeni would be reappointed as chairperson of the SAA board given that during her tenure as board chairperson previously, she has turned SAA into nothing more than a money sucking leech”.
