South Africa’s Steyn to have scan on shoulder injury
With England’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker watching on with the calf injury sustained in the lead-up to the match, Broad claimed the prized scalps of Proteas captain Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers, after bowling opener Stiaan van Zyl with the second ball of the innings.

South African team manager Mohamed Moosajee said Steyn had experienced discomfort in his shoulder after the first day, which was probably linked to bowling a long spell after a lengthy lay-off because of a groin injury.
“The morning is crucial for us because it’s still pretty even. If we get one or two partnerships going and the tail adds a few we can get close to their score or even past it”, he said.
Facing a constantly testing combination of Broad, Steven Finn and Moeen Ali, the rest of South Africa’s batsmen failed. South Africa’s No. 3 fell to a nick off Broad and a catch by Bairstow after adding just five more runs. With the hosts conceding a 79-run lead, Steyn’s absence is sure to hurt them.
Elgar, 67 not out overnight, punched the air and pounded his chest in exuberant celebration after reaching 100, the first South African to do so in their last seven test matches. He now has three hundreds and two fifties (one of them an important 83 against Australia) since nailing down the opening slot last February. The identity of who should open alongside Elgar is unclear, but at least his place is settled.
With the scoreboard resuming at 137 for four, Broad made an immediate breakthrough for England for the second day in a row. “He s got the ability to hit good balls for four and score very quickly, so we came up with a 7-2 plan, nearly to say, you can hit your good shots but you will hit them to fielders.” said Broad.
He is sure to have a big role to play in the conclusion of the match – possibly as a number eight batsman and certainly as the tourists’ frontline spinner on a wearing pitch.
Hales looked secure enough, saw off the initial shine, and had started to expand his game against the spinner, sweeping him cleanly for six and to the fine leg boundary, so there was a sense of urgency there, particularly with Compton now in and intent on continuing his own game in the same manner that a predecessor Jonathan Trott might have done.
Dane Piedt and Morne Morkel both succumbed in Finn’s first over with the new ball to send England to the break in the ascendance.
Sheffield’s Joe Root equalled a Test record as he passed 50 for the 13th time in 26 innings this year as England went on the ascendancy in the first Test in South Africa. With South Africa looking flat, Compton eased to 45 when he was put down again, with de Villiers the culprit once more.
Root looked busy at the crease and made 24 off 37 balls, including a pulled six off Abbott.

South Africa pace bowler Dale Steyn’s continued participation in the first test depends on a morning fitness test after a shoulder spasm restricted him to just 22 balls in England’s second innings on Monday.
