The Tutu family released a statement confirming thatTutu’s surgery was successful and that he was in good spirits.

Tutu also thanks the Archbishop’s superb medical team.

Relatives did not give any more detail on his ailment, but said it was not related to the prostate cancer he has had for almost 20 years.

He was hospitalised three times in 2015 over a persistent infection that his foundation – the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation – said was a result of the prostate cancer treatment he has been receiving for almost 20 years.
