Several Japanese government sources said that South Korea provided behind-the-scenes confirmation about the precondition.

The start was delayed by half an hour after overnight and early morning rain and it was no surprise when Amla chose to bowl in overcast conditions after he won the toss.

Cook, who was never comfortable, edged to Dean Elgar at second slip in the third over of the test. Hales fell to a catch behind by wicketkeeper AB de Villiers as Steyn capitalized on the conditions.

“It’s been a few years out for Nick and myself so we really enjoyed batting and most importantly scoring runs for the team”, said Taylor.

He overtook Compton just before tea, with Piedt taken for back-to-back boundaries, and England left the field in good heart for the first time in the day.

South Africa bowler Dale Steyn: “The match is kind of even. We would have loved to take a wicket or two more”.

Taylor, though, was unable to survive the day and give himself a chance of a maiden Test century as Steyn struck shortly before the close. And the stop-start nature of the day was allowing Steyn to ease back into his first competitive match after injury with regular breaks, which was useful given South Africa’s decision to go into the match with just four specialist bowlers, one of them a spinner.

When rain stopped play for the second time midway through the afternoon session with England on 55 for 3, everything appeared to be falling into place for the home side. It ended swiftly when offspinner Dane Piedt’s first delivery of the game turned sharply and trapped Root lbw back near his stumps for South Africa’s third wicket, with England then 49-3.

It was a mistake and a misjudgement but one that many openers have made and Hales, who managed 10, can expect a run in the team as England look to end the top-order merry-go-round. “We have such depth in the squad that there’s no need to take a risk, it’s not a hammer blow to us”.

On the absence of England’s Jimmy Anderson, who misses out here with a calf strain, Steyn added: “If he doesn’t play [in the series] I’ll be very happy”.
