South African opposition beats ANC in vote to govern Johannesburg
The DA’s mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba has been elected as mayor for the City of Johannesburg.

He defeated the ANC’s candidate and previous mayor Parks Tau with 144 votes to 125.
Then, just as councillors prepared to vote for whip and mayor, an ANC councillor collapsed and died…
Mashaba postponed his inaugural speech following the passing of an ANC councillor during the first sitting of council. The leftist Economic Freedom Fighters became the kingmaker when it came third in the city.
He later told eNCA that he looked forward to working with the EFF, who helped Mashaba to win the Joburg ticket.
It’s confirmed the councillor was ill.
The DA’s Vasco da Gama was elected speaker of the Joburg Council.
This follows a marathoncouncil meeting, attended by several political leaders including Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane and EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu, as well as party spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.
The party said it would lay criminal charges against the ruling party and would take necessary action against their councillors who were involved. Voting was disrupted numerous times, with agents arguing over regulations around secret ballots. The rest of the 270 council seats went to smaller parties.

Through his lawyers, Bovu called on the red berets to provide proof of their claims or face legal action. It resulted from August 3 local elections when the ANC’s support retained outright majority control in just three of the nation’s eight metropolitan councils.
