Don’t put the pedal to the metal in Colorado – a recent nationwide survey names the state the strictest on speeding and reckless driving in the country. However, Americans continue to do it. WalletHub analyzed penalties for speeding and reckless driving in each of the 50 states.
The average maximum cost of a ticket for reckless driving is $742, according to WalletHub, with the lowest being $100 in Kentucky, Mississippi and New Mexico.
About a quarter of the states – including Texas – allow drivers ticketed for speeding to argue that their speed was “reasonable” regardless of what that roadside sign suggested. The study, which includes detailed findings regarding speeding and reckless driving, brings to light surprising facts about just how lenient Texas is.

“Our guys do run traffic (stops), but speeding is not our only focus or priority”, Parker said. Based on the data WalletHub used, Colorado is the strictest in the nation. In Arkansas or North Carolina, for example, driving more than 15 miles per hour over the speed limit is automatically considered reckless driving.

Colorado ranked as second strictest for the minimum jail time on a driver’s first reckless offence. However, there is no minimum jail time for reckless driving in Texas.
