By 7:00 p.m. its center was located about 460 kilometers (285 miles) west of Hong Kong and moving steadily inland. Authorities in Hainan, a popular holiday island, canceled 68 flights and suspended rail services, the official news agency Xinhua reported.

Vietnam has a five-tier color-coded weather warning system, with purple representing the most severe weather, followed by red, orange, yellow and blue.

As of Sunday evening, there were no reports of injuries or damage from the storm.

It is forecast to make a landfall on Sunday noon at the coastal area of the southern part of Leizhou Peninsular of Hainan, with a speed of up to 151.2 km per hour at its center.

More than 60,000 fishing boats have returned to port in the two provinces and more than 40,000 fishermen working on fish farms have moved to shelters.

Even before the typhoon hit land, rain and strong winds lashed the regions, including Hainan – where thousands of Chinese are vacationing during the weeklong National Day holidays.
