Ingrid Garrison, state public health veterinarian for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, compared the situation to other mosquito illnesses.

The Zika outbreak is affecting large parts of Latin America and the Caribbean, with Brazil the hardest hit.

The virus is not now known to be circulating in the mosguito population in Kentucky. The most recent case in the United States was just discovered in New Mexico.

Mosquito species that can carry Zika also bite during the day. A weblink about Zika Travel Information, http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/zika-travel-information, is found on that site.

The World Health Organization says research has strengthened the association between Zika infection and the occurrence of birth defects and neurological disorders. The vast majority of these cases were reported in Puerto Rico, which has 249 confirmed cases of the virus, 24 of which involve pregnant women, The New York Times reported.

The CDC also encouraged pregnant women either to not have sex or use protection with their male partners if they traveled to Cuba. But as many as 80 percent of people infected never develop symptoms.
