China’s cautious approach to its isolated and unpredictable totalitarian neighbor has not borne fruit, however, and now Washington is pushing for stronger worldwide action.

The UN Security Council also held an emergency session and pledged to swiftly pursue new sanctions against North Korea, saying the test was a clear violation of previous UN resolutions.

“A huge explosion occurred, and that should make all countries concerned”, Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin, commander of the U.S. seventh fleet, told reporters aboard the aircraft carrier the USS Ronald Reagan south of Tokyo.
