South Korea Training Will Include Mock Attack On Nuclear Facility

North Korea has to date ignored global criticism since conducting its fifth nuclear test on September 9 and this week said it had successfully tested a new rocket engine that can be used to launch satellites, again in violation of United Nations sanctions.

The Yonhap News Agency reported that the two B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers are anticipated to arrive at Osan Air Base in PyeongTaek this week.

Both bombers landed just 25 miles south of North Korea’s capital after flying over a United States live-fire training site in the Pocheon area bordering the North.

US Forces Korea said in a statement the flight by the pair of strategic bombers was a show of force and of the US commitment to preserve the security of the peninsula and the region.

The United States flew two supersonic bombers over South Korea on Wednesday, the second such flight in two weeks’ time, in the latest display of military might amid renewed tensions with North Korea.

The B-1B supersonic bomber, which went into operation in 1980s, is known to be capable of carrying as heavy as 61 tons of weapons, including joint direct attack munitions (JDAM), conventional bombs, air-to-surface missiles and cruise missiles.

The B-1B, capable of reaching the Korean Peninsula from Guam in just two hours, is one of the US military’s three major multirole, long-range bombers along with the B-52 and B-2.

In July, Seoul announced it would be deploying advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile systems from the US. -South Korea drills that have sparked verbal attacks from North Korea’s state media and propaganda outlets. One of the shafts, tunnel No. 2 has already been used for the fifth nuclear test, but the report showed that No. 3 was also covered with a net canopy.

Pyongyang said Tuesday that it tested an engine jet on the ground of a carrier rocket for geo-stationary satellite, which Seoul military saw as a long-range missile.
