South Sudan challenges US watchdog’s report on corruption

“There is no clear reason given by National Security to shut down the newspaper but we are quite aware that they have been demanding our paper avail an opinion writer who wrote an open letter to President Salva Kiir, accusing National Security of corruption and nepotism”, journalist Majack Kuany Alier told Anadolu Agency.

Clooney, an outspoken humanitarian and Democrat, told CNN’s Jake Tapper Monday that people should not think of the oil-rich country, which forces aligned with its two leaders have been been engaged in retaliatory fighting in the years after it gained independence in 2011, as just “another corrupt government”.

South Sudan’s devastating civil war has enriched senior officials directing the conflict, including the president and his main rival, a report charged Monday.

He and USA actor Don Cheadle, a member of Not On Our Watch and a human rights activist, gave evidence of the leaders’ complicity in looting and the destruction of South Sudan and suggested possible measures that could help stop corruption in the world’s youngest nation.

The group said a network of global facilitators stretched from arms dealers in Ukraine to construction companies in Turkey, mining firms in Kenya, and Chinese investors involved in joint ventures in gambling and private security sectors in South Sudan. Meanwhile, more than 5 million people in the country are suffering from hunger and urgently need food aid.

Several of President Kiir’s children have attended high school and college in Australia, Malaysia and Uganda.

The country is one of the biggest supporters of the South Sudanese people, providing basic services including health and education that are essential for the population’s future, as well as massive lifesaving assistance that has helped avert starvation over the last two years.

The report obtained images of officials’ family members on vacation as well as documentation of their properties overseas.

Local laws forbid constitutional office holders from engaging in business activities outside the government while in office, it said.

The government insists it does not condone rights abuses and deals with perpetrators. The group said it had obtained documents showing that Kiir’s 12-year-old son held a 25 percent stake in a holding company formed in February 2016.

“We can either take action or we can spend the next decade mopping up the mess”.

South Sudanese government spokesman Michael Makuei Lueth has denied reports of new fighting between Kiir’s supporters and Machar’s.

Clooney said that wasn’t enough by itself.

South Sudan descended into war in December 2013 after Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar of plotting a coup.

The fighting has killed thousands of people and driven more than 2 million people from their homes, with many fleeing to neighbouring states.

Deng arrived in Cape Town earlier on Tuesday for talks with Ramaphosa on the peace process in South Sudan.

The report suggests targeted sanctions, asset freezes, and increased monitoring from global financial institutions.
