The cup match was abandoned when Wilkinson collapsed, and the BBC report that he was treated on the pitch before being taken to the Calderdale Royal Hospital in nearby Halifax.

The defender’s club Shaw Lane, who play in the Northern Premier League Division One South, confirmed the loss of life in a statement on Facebook.

“It’s just devastating. Everyone went to the hospital”.

A former Loughborough University footballer has died after collapsing on the field in a non-league game last night.

“His mum and dad are such fearless people”.

Mr Wilkinson, who had just graduated from Loughborough University and moved in with his girlfiend in Sheffield, had signed for the club in pre-season.

Meanwhile, the Football Association (FA) also extended its sympathies to the family and friends of Wilkinson, who began his career with Hull City before moving into non-league football.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with him family and friends at this time. There are no more words at this time”.

After a spell with Goole AFC and Scarborough Athletic, Wilkinson left Hull to join Rushall Olympic, before leaving the club in the summer to join Barnsley-based Shaw Lane.

Wilkinson’s death comes a day after Ben Idrissa Derme – the former Burkina Faso worldwide – died while playing for AJ Biguglia in the French Cup.
