A police spokeswoman said no arrests had yet been made, and appealed for revellers to come forward with information.
A statement released today said: “Police are now treating this rare and isolated incident as a targeted assault against the woman”.
But staff rushed to give her first aid – describing the injuries as appearing as if her face was “melting”.
A woman was left with severe burns to her face, neck and arms after acid was thrown in her face during a night out, police have said.
The man, who is believed to have known the woman, then fled the scene.
She was rushed to Southampton General Hospital and is thought to be in a critical condition but expected to survive after receiving treatment for serious burns to her face, eyes and hands.
Firefighters were called to wash away a container with a quarter of a pint of acid in, which remained after the attack.
‘It was right by Turtle Bay. Hope she is ok! People must have seen it happen, it’s just so bad !
The 37-year-old was taken to hospital after being attacked outside a restaurant in Southampton.
