Southern California storm causes flash flooding

The Southland runs the chance of getting wet today, Thursday and Friday, including in thunderstorms that could trigger debris flows in areas denuded by wildfire and flash flooding, forecasters said.

Any thunderstorm today will move quickly over the region thanks to a strong southerly flow, but as the flow weakens Thursday, “the flash flood potential will increase over the mountains and desert due to slower moving storms”, it said. Rainfall amounts between 4-6 inches have been reported near Freemont Dam and Leona Valley, the NWS said.

The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for parts of northwestern Los Angeles County and northeastern Ventura County, advising motorists to avoid those areas.

The flooding has resulted in the partial closure of Interstate 5, one of the main thoroughfares through the region.

A water rescue was taking place with crews searching for drivers stranded in their cars because of heavy mud flow. So far, no injuries have been reported. “We want people to know that overflows are not very safe”. A helicopter had also been sent out to get a better vantage point of the roads. “There were reports that there are people in the truck there….”
