Southern Illinois police officer shot, wounded during chase
The Carbondale Police Department says officers were responding to reports of shots fired on North Robert Stalls Street Sunday night when they noticed a tan four-door vehicle speeding away.

At 11:38 p.m. Sunday, Carbondale officers were on patrol in the 700 block of North Robert A. Stalls Street.
During the chase, a suspect fired several gunshots at the officers, hitting the police auto and one of the pursuing officers.
As the officers were headed to the scene, they found a tan, four-door vehicle, driving away from the area at a high rate of speed.
The officers chased the auto, and attempted to stop it. Police say a suspect in the vehicle shot at the squad vehicle, hitting the vehicle and one of the officers inside. Police did not return fire, authorities say.
The officer, who was not identified, is in serious condition.
We understand that officer has been taken to a St. Louis-area hospital.
The investigation, which is ongoing, is being led by the Illinois State Police. The investigation into the incident is continuing.
