The school said Gales will begin a “rigorous rehabilitation program” on Thursday. The Shepherd Center is a world-renowned hospital known for the specialized treatment and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord and brain injuries and diseases. It was determined Gales suffered “several fractures” in the neck and underwent surgery at ARMC this past weekend.

Due to the overwhelming amount of love shown to them from everyone, the family is asking for privacy at this time.

Ray Belton, the president and chancellor of the Southern University system, sent a letter of thanks to UGA for the support from the university and its community. The player’s injuries are stabilized and he can move his upper body, according to the school.

Southern wide receiver Devon Gales suffered a severe spinal cord injury including several fractures in his neck, according Jon Cooper of Saturday Down South.

A few of UGA’s medical staffers were the first to respond.

UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity immediately coordinated plans with SU Athletic Director Roman Banks for Devon’s care and support that included covering expenses to fly the student-athlete’s parents to Athens, Georgia, to be by his bedside.

“We’ll do everything in our power as the Bulldog Nation to bless Devon and his family going through this time”, Richt said.
