Southern Mississippi sprinter Tori Bowie qualifies for a pair of Olympic events

Martinez, who had tripped in the 800 and lost her Olympic chance at that distance, was sixth with one lap to go Sunday and made a desperate lunge for third and the last Olympic spot.

Molly Huddle was actually the first female double champion in the trials, winning the 5,000-meter run on Sunday to add to her 10,000 crown.

Not bad for the junior out of Union Catholic High School in New Jersey, who turned on the Beijing Olympics eight years ago, saw Felix winning the 4×400 relay and thought, “I’d like to be like her, someday”.

Five reigning Olympic gold medallists and five current world champions have been named along with 84 first-time Olympians on the U.S. team for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Instead she had only the field’s 10th-best mark 19-8.

The U.S., which won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012 London Olympics, is in Group A with Australia, China, Venezuela, France and Serbia.

“It was not exactly what I was hoping for”. Felix qualified last weekend for the 400, but had been dealing with a sore right ankle.

The injury was so severe she avoided running around the track in the correct, counterclockwise direction until just before trials, for fear she’d put too much outside pressure on her injured ankle.

“I think there’s more expectations now than there were before”, she said. “She was giving up three steps out of the blocks”.

Felix, after that slow start, made it back to fourth place coming around the curve, behind Tori Bowie, Jenna Prandini and Ariana Washington.

It can’t be a comfortable feeling, with the finish line in sight but Felix in pursuit.

Yet the moment Biles has spent her entire career training for didn’t quite go as planned. “It just wasn’t there”. Stevens changed that in a matter of 22.30 seconds.

“It wasn’t something that I intentionally did, but I’m happy that it happened because it got me here”, Prandini said. Prandini edged Felix for third place. She has been the focus of attention due to her early success and her father, but fellow high jumper Chaunte Lowe’s story is also worth noting.

There were no tears.

WIDE OPEN: The women’s 400-meter hurdles is wide open after favorite Shamier Little failed to make it out of the semifinals. Sunday’s victory was Suhr’s 17th national title, the most ever. It was that year that they decided on the goal of four gold medals at one Olympics.

Last October, Michael Johnson, the last man to sweep the 200m and 400m at an Olympics (two women have done it), urged Felix to double in Rio at a USA Track and Field Hall of Fame induction.

A lot of people might have difficulty believing that Sydney McLaughlin is only 16 years old because of the achievements that she already has in track & field.

Muhammad won the 2013 US title but missed the meet a year later and then finished seventh in 2015. Bowie is the first former Golden Eagle to advance to the Olympics in multiple events.

“I always said that I wanted to compete against the best”, Suhr said.

“Sometimes, I just forget that I’m 16”, McLaughlin told the Associated Press.
