Southgate favourite to replace humiliated Hodgson

Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn hinted on Tuesday that Gareth Southgate will become interim England manager and suggested a female coach could succeed Roy Hodgson on a permanent basis.

We even believed if we got to the quarter-finals we could get beyond that.

Hodgson added: “Nothing in the first three games gave me any indication we were playing as poorly as we did last night, but we did”. There was a lot of hype coming into the tournament about our young, energetic youngsters, our players aren’t as good as we think they are.

The selection process will be led by Glenn, FA board member David Gill and technical director Dan Ashworth – and they plan to conduct a widespread consultation process before narrowing down the contenders.

“That is what happened, we are still recovering from that and I am very fragile today”.

Glenn, the former United Biscuits, Birdseye and Walkers Crisps boss who was hired by the FA previous year, caused raised eyebrows by saying “I’m not a football expert” as he attempted to justify his claim that England had made progress under Hodgson. “I am leaving behind me a good group of players to work with”.

“We looked like we didn’t have a clue in terms of a way to play”. Iceland were possibly the better team on the night despite us having the best of possession.

Asked about who might take over as England manager, Glenn professed the next Three Lions chief may not be English, per BBC Sport: “We are looking for the best person, not necessarily the best Englishman”.

I have no complaints about the way I’ve been treated and I do understand that there will be criticism but it’s a fact of life. We have got to get the right person.

” It was a mixture of players massively under-performing, management and a team of staff not being able to make the big decisions at the right time and that includes before the game”.

I think we will have an England team to be proud of – this group as they mature will show they’re worthy of wearing the shirt.

One particularly bad game has caused a lot of damage to me, the team and the team going forward because they’ve got a bridge to fix.

“We are going to be canvassing opinion from former managers, current managers, clubs and players to make sure we get a lot of wisdom”.

I maintain I’m unhappy about it because it’s no longer my job and so much will be written that nothing I can say will do more than fuel the flames.

“We’ve come such a long way and football has a amusing way of bringing out emotions, as you’ve seen when we played them a couple of weeks ago”.

Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney has insisted that Hodgson always had the players’ support, labelling reports they had lost faith in the outgoing manager “completely untrue”.

“I think it would be nice if it was an Englishman”.

“We just don’t know yet who the runners and riders would be for the job”.

If the analysis comes from results then no we didn’t do well but I think in the three games we played – I’m getting boring – we didn’t take our chances well enough.
